Overtime, 5G IoT will improve, innovations will be introduced, and gradually vehicles will do more and more of the driving.
FREMONT, CA: Autonomous cars may still be years away from extensive deployment, but connected cars are very much with the world. The modern automobile is fast becoming a sensor-powered mobile Internet of Things device, with considerable onboard computing power and communication systems devoted to the vehicle location, driver behavior, engine diagnostics, vehicle activity, the surrounding environment, and the vehicle's occupants. All of these systems use 5G cellular technology, among others. Although 5G networks are still evolving for mobile operators, the pace of implementation and launches is picking up.
It is essential to distinguish between a connected vehicle and an autonomous vehicle. A connected vehicle can get information from an outside source and connect with a consumer's mobile device. Connected vehicles are common today. A vehicle's navigation system is connected to the GPS network. In traffic or any other disruptions on the road, the navigation system can plan a new route to avoid these hurdles.

The next evolution of connected vehicles will be innovations in V2X, where X may be a pedestrian or a traffic management system in an intersection. Also known as vehicle-to-everything, V2X is the final connected vehicle advance that will help automated braking of vehicles to limit traffic accidents. Even connecting a mobile device to a car's dashboard is not new in the grand scheme of things. The next generation of connected vehicles is going to do many more. 5G vehicles will connect to 5G networks, which will not only allow ultra-fast, low-latency communications; it will also enable them to communicate with each other.
Connected vehicle technology refers to V2X innovations. An autonomous vehicle is a next stage, where the car does the driving, and it will ultimately depend on the integration of 5G technology in automotive systems. Some of the self-driving cars were not connected vehicles. They depended on radar and planned routes to guide the roads. However, going forward, self-driving cars will be connected as there is several benefits for a relatively lower cost.
