Here is a list of standardized names of advanced driver assistance system that would help car shoppers understand and get the lifesaving features they want.

FREMONT, CA: According to reports, approximately 93 percent of new vehicles offer at least one advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), but different names may cause confusion among people. To avoid this confusion, Consumer Reports has partnered with other automotive safety institutions to develop standardized names for various new advanced safety systems.

Here are some names and descriptions of the most common ADAS systems:

Collision Warnings

• Blind spot warning: It detects and alerts the driver of the presence of vehicles in nearby lanes.

• Lane departure warning: It evaluates the position of the vehicle within the driving lane and alerts the driver as the vehicle approaches or crosses lane markers.

• Parking obstacle: It spots the hindrances near the vehicle during parking maneuvers.

• Forward collision warning: It warns the driver regarding impending collision while traveling forward. Some systems also consist of pedestrians or other object detection.

Collision intervention

• Automatic emergency braking: It provides forward collision warning by detecting potential collisions while in forwarding motion. If needed, it automatically applies the brakes to avoid or lessen the severity of impact.

• Rear automatic braking: It comes into force while traveling in reverse and automatically applies the brakes to lessen the severity of impact.

• Automatic emergency steering: This feature spots potential collision and automatically controls steering to avoid or lessen the severity of impact.

Parking Assistance

• Remote parking: It automatically braking, steering, and shifting to park the vehicle without the assistance of a driver.

• Active parking assistance: During parking, it controls steering and other functions. The driver may be responsible for braking, acceleration, and gear position.

Other Systems

• Driver monitoring: It evaluates the engagement of the driver in the task of driving. It also monitors the driver’s eye movement and head position.

• Night vision: It projects enhanced images on the instrument cluster or head-up display to provide proper night vision to the drivers.

• Surround-view camera: This camera uses other cameras located around the vehicle to present view of surroundings.
