TESCO - The Eastern Specialty Company :Pioneering Solutions for EV Charger Testing

Electric vehicles (EVs) are set to power the future of the automotive industry, and the rapid development of EV supply equipment demands innovative high-speed charging solutions. This has raised the need for testing equipment that can tolerate high-load for longer durations without getting damaged and ensure infrastructure reliability, user safety, and equipment efficiency and accuracy.

“Our one-stop-shop solution is ideal for all clients as it uses a transactional mode compliant with Handbook 44 provisions to test the accuracy of energy delivery, ensuring maximum safety,” says Iosif Grigoryev, engineering manager of TESCO.

TESCO (The Eastern Specialty Company) is a leading manufacturer and provider of innovative and durable testing accessories for the meter industry, with over a century of experience in the field. The company is now addressing the need for durable and high-load EV testers by offering an electronic vehicle service equipment (EVSE) test system, TS400. The system is designed to meet both field tester and manufacturer needs and offers complete capabilities to cater to every EVSE charging protocol in the world.

The TS400 system consists of two components; the T4000 EVSE Tester, the brain of the equipment, and a PL4000 EV Load Emulator that provides no-load and adjustable-load modes.
Clients can use the T4000 to test AC level 1 and 2 systems up to 80 amps maximum current and DC fast charge systems up to 200A at 1000V DC. When used in combination with the PL4000, the system can reach up to 57 amps for AC and 500V for DC.

TESCO also offers a software called TESCO Device Manager (TDM) that collects all the information related to the test procedure and results, streamlining the testing process for users.

Clients can simply download the software from its website without any cost and use it to connect T4000 with their computer or a local network for ingesting the test data from the unit. The software quickly transforms the collected information into meaningful reports, enabling clients to drive informed decisions. All the complex ground fault and safety tests can be carried out from a computer through remote communication protocol without an operator physically engaging with the system.

In one instance, the remote communication protocol helped an EV charger manufacturer easily manage the unit through their network without spending their human resources. The client needed machinery that could rapidly test and perform safety checks on chargers. They positioned the testing apparatus at the end of the production line to run a brief ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) safety test on every manufactured EV charger. This enabled the client to send the faulty equipment back to engineers for reexamination and the good ones for assembly with minimal human effort. In another case, an EV infrastructure provider used TS400 to test their EV chargers installed in parking lots across the state.

TESCO’s commitment to reliability and safety has enabled many clients to easily test their chargers in the field and in facilities. The TS400 system is the latest addition to its portfolio, aimed at revolutionizing the EV space by providing a reliable and easyto- use comprehensive testing solution for EV chargers. A focus on innovation, service, and delivering equipment with the right functioning has enabled it to successfully serve utility clients for over a century. It helps them with meter shop layout services, statistical sampling, equipment specifications, field services, facility relocation, and quality systems. Continually enhancing the TS400 system based on client feedback, TESCO aims to be a leader in the EV space.
